Gen Con 2026: July 30 - August 2 · Full event guide

The biggest mistake Gen Con newbies make: Assuming you'll "just grab something" near the Convention Center. With 70,000 people thinking the same thing, the closest restaurants get 60-90 minute waits at peak hours. Plan ahead, book reservations, or walk 10-15 minutes to find better food with shorter waits.

Book Reservations NOW

These restaurants fill up weeks before Gen Con. If you want a sit-down dinner during the convention, make reservations as soon as possible. Don't wait until you're in Indianapolis.

St. Elmo Steak House$$$$ · 3 min walk
The most famous restaurant in Indianapolis. The shrimp cocktail is a rite of passage. Sells out for Gen Con dinner slots by mid-June. Book ASAP.
Harry & Izzy's$$$ · 3 min walk
St. Elmo's sister restaurant. Same shrimp cocktail, broader menu. Slightly easier to get a reservation but still books up fast.
Fogo de Chao$$$$ · 5 min walk
All-you-can-eat Brazilian churrasco. Perfect for gamers who've been running on snack food all day and want to feast.
The Oceanaire Seafood Room$$$$ · 5 min walk
Upscale seafood in a retro ocean-liner setting. A nice change of pace from steakhouses.
Bluebeard$$$ · 15 min walk (Fountain Square)
One of Indianapolis's best restaurants. Seasonal, farm-to-table New American. Worth the walk. Book 2-3 weeks ahead.

Breakfast (Before Morning Sessions)

First Gen Con sessions start at 8 AM. These spots open early enough to fuel up before you hit the exhibit hall.

Cafe Patachou$$ · 5 min walk
Indy's favorite breakfast spot. The breadbasket is legendary. Get there by 7:30 AM to avoid the convention rush.
Yolk$$ · 5 min walk
Creative breakfast on Monument Circle. Massive portions. Expect a line after 9 AM during Gen Con.
Hotel restaurants
If you're staying at the JW Marriott, Hyatt, or Westin, their breakfast buffets avoid the outdoor walk entirely. Not the cheapest option, but the convenience is unbeatable during Gen Con.
Milktooth$$$ · 15 min walk (Fountain Square)
Nationally acclaimed brunch (Bon Appetit's best new restaurants). Worth the trek if you have a free morning. No reservations — expect a 30-45 min wait.

Quick Lunch (Between Sessions)

You've got 60-90 minutes between sessions. These spots get you fed and back fast.

Georgia Street food trucks$ · 1 min walk
During Gen Con, food trucks line Georgia Street right outside the Convention Center. Your fastest option. Cash and cards accepted. Selection rotates daily.
HotBox Pizza$ · 3 min walk
Grab a slice and go. Quick, cheap, reliable. The closest budget option to the Convention Center.
Giordano's$$ · 5 min walk
Chicago deep dish takes 45 minutes — order ahead by phone if you're short on time. Or grab a thin crust for a faster turnaround.
Pearl Street Pizzeria$ · 5 min walk
In the Wholesale District, slightly off the beaten path. Shorter waits than spots right on Illinois Street.
India Garden$$ · 8 min walk
The lunch buffet is a Gen Con secret weapon: all-you-can-eat Indian food for around $14. Fill up fast and get back to the convention.
Pro tip: Avoid the 12-1 PM rush. Eat lunch early (11 AM) or late (2 PM) and you'll skip the worst lines at every restaurant near the Convention Center.

Sit-Down Dinner

Gen Con sessions end around 6-8 PM (some run to 10 PM). These are your best options for a real sit-down meal.

Walking Distance (5-10 min)

Kilroy's Bar & Grill$$ · 5 min walk
The unofficial Gen Con restaurant. Massive menu, good energy, open late. Gets packed but the staff is used to the convention crowd. No reservations — just put your name in and grab a drink at the bar.
Punch Bowl Social$$ · 3 min walk
Bowling, karaoke, arcade games, and dinner. Perfect for a Gen Con group that wants entertainment with their meal.
Weber Grill$$$ · 5 min walk
Everything on Weber kettles, right on Monument Circle. Good patio in the summer heat. Takes reservations.
Slippery Noodle Inn$$ · 8 min walk
Indiana's oldest bar (1850). Live blues music every night. Grab dinner and enjoy the show. A Gen Con classic.

Mass Ave Escape (12 min walk)

The smartest Gen Con dinner move: walk 12 minutes to Mass Ave. Better food, shorter waits, and you'll feel like you've left the convention behind.

Bakersfield Mass Ave$$
Street tacos, 100+ tequilas. Fun, lively atmosphere that matches the Gen Con energy. The fish tacos are the move.
The Eagle Mass Ave$$
Best fried chicken on Mass Ave. The honey hot chicken sandwich is legendary. Simple menu, everything is excellent.
The Rathskeller$$
Oldest restaurant in Indianapolis (1894). German food and a massive outdoor biergarten — perfect for a summer evening during Gen Con.
BRU Burger Bar$$
Creative gourmet burgers. Quick service, consistently good. Great for a group with varied tastes.
