Downtown Indianapolis Construction & Closures Guide 2026
Updated March 12, 2026
Downtown Indianapolis is in the middle of its most ambitious infrastructure cycle in decades. Multiple major projects are running simultaneously through 2026 and into 2027. If you are visiting for a convention, sporting event, or business trip, this guide tells you what is closed, what is disrupted, and how to navigate around it.
Georgia Street Reconstruction
Georgia Street — the eight-block entertainment corridor between the Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium — is closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic between Illinois Street and Capitol Avenue for a full reconstruction. The project is converting Georgia Street into a permanent pedestrian-friendly plaza with wider sidewalks, new landscaping, improved drainage, and event infrastructure.
Affected area: Georgia Street from Illinois Street to Capitol Avenue
Expected completion: Fall 2026
Impact: No pedestrian or vehicle access through the construction zone. Bars and restaurants on Georgia Street east of Illinois remain open and accessible from the east.
Capitol Avenue Reconstruction
Capitol Avenue between Washington Street and Maryland Street is undergoing a multi-month reconstruction project that includes utility upgrades, street resurfacing, and pedestrian infrastructure improvements. The closure affects one of the primary north-south routes on the west side of downtown.
Affected area: Capitol Avenue, Washington Street to Maryland Street
Impact: Vehicle traffic detoured to Illinois Street or West Street. Pedestrian access maintained on at least one side of the street with temporary sidewalks, but expect delays and limited accessibility.
If you are driving to Lucas Oil Stadium from the north, avoid Capitol Avenue entirely. Use Illinois Street or West Street as your north-south route instead.
Indiana Convention Center Expansion
The Indiana Convention Center is undergoing a major expansion that will add significant exhibit hall and meeting space to the south side of the complex. The expansion includes the new Signia by Hilton hotel (800 rooms, skywalk-connected) and new ballroom facilities.
Impact on visitors: Limited sidewalk access along the south side of the Convention Center. Construction fencing and equipment reduce pedestrian space on portions of South Street and Maryland Street near the expansion zone.
Skywalk: The existing skywalk system connecting hotels to the ICC remains open. Some corridors may have temporary signage redirecting foot traffic.
Skywalk Impacts
The Indianapolis skywalk system — the enclosed, climate-controlled corridors connecting 12+ hotels to the Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium — remains open and operational during the construction period. However, some sections may have temporary closures or rerouting as construction projects tie into the skywalk network.
JW Marriott → Convention Center → Lucas Oil Stadium: Open
Marriott Downtown → Convention Center: Open
Westin → Convention Center: Open
Hyatt Regency → Convention Center: Open

Circle Centre Mall / Traction Yards Redevelopment
Circle Centre Mall — the downtown retail complex connected to the Convention Center via skywalk — is being redeveloped into Traction Yards, a mixed-use district combining retail, dining, entertainment, office space, and residential. This is a multi-year transformation that will fundamentally change the south side of Monument Circle.
What's still open: Some ground-floor retail and restaurant tenants continue to operate. The skywalk connection between the Convention Center and the mall structure remains accessible.
What's closed: Upper-level retail has largely vacated. The traditional mall shopping experience is effectively over.
For visitors: do not plan a shopping trip to Circle Centre Mall as it existed in previous years. The transition to Traction Yards is underway, and the retail options are significantly reduced. The skywalk pass-through remains useful for getting between the Convention Center corridor and Monument Circle on foot.
I-65 Ramp Changes (South Split)
The I-65/I-70 South Split reconstruction project continues to affect highway access to downtown Indianapolis. Ramp configurations on the south and east sides of downtown have changed, and some familiar exit ramps no longer exist or have been relocated.
Follow signage carefully — familiar ramps may have moved. GPS navigation with real-time traffic (Google Maps, Waze) is strongly recommended. The West Street exit remains the most reliable approach to Lucas Oil Stadium and the Convention Center from the south.
I-70 West and I-65 South approaches are less affected but may have temporary lane restrictions. The Meridian Street and Pennsylvania Street exits provide the most direct routes to downtown hotels and the Convention Center.
IndyGo Blue Line Construction
IndyGo's Blue Line bus rapid transit project includes construction along portions of Washington Street through downtown. The Blue Line will eventually provide high-frequency transit service connecting the east side of Indianapolis to downtown and the airport, but during the construction phase, Washington Street has lane restrictions, temporary sidewalk closures, and reduced parking in some blocks.
Impact: Lane closures, temporary sidewalk routing, and reduced on-street parking in the construction zone. Businesses along Washington Street remain open but may be harder to access during active construction phases.
For visitors: If walking along Washington Street east of the Convention Center, expect some sidewalk detours. The disruption is manageable on foot but can slow vehicle traffic significantly during peak construction hours.
Tips for Navigating Downtown During Construction
With this many simultaneous projects, navigating downtown Indianapolis in 2026 requires a little more planning than usual. Here is what works.
The skywalk bypasses nearly all of the street-level construction. If you are staying in a connected hotel (JW Marriott, Marriott Downtown, Westin, Hyatt Regency, and others), you can get to the Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium without setting foot on a construction-affected street. This is the single best strategy for 2026. See our Skywalk Guide.
Both are construction zones. For north-south vehicle traffic, use Illinois Street or West Street. For east-west vehicle traffic, use Maryland Street or Washington Street (with patience for Blue Line construction).
JW Marriott Garage — skywalk-connected, west of most construction zones.
Pan Am Plaza Garage — central, accessible from West Street.
Circle Centre Garage — accessed from Illinois Street or Washington Street, still fully operational.
Road closures affect where rideshare drivers can reach. For Lucas Oil Stadium events, request pickup on South Street or West Street rather than directly in front of the stadium. For the Convention Center, the Maryland Street side (north) is generally more accessible than the south side during construction.
Walking routes that took 5 minutes in previous years may take 8–10 minutes with construction detours. If you are walking from your hotel to a restaurant or event, add a buffer. This is especially true for routes along the south side of the Convention Center and around Capitol Avenue.
Construction timelines shift. A project scheduled for completion in Fall 2026 may finish early or run late. Check downtownindy.org or the official Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association site for the most current closure information before you travel.
